Note from the author, Maria Teresa Ruiz:

I always had the dream to write a children’s book, my mother always encouraged me to be the best part of myself. I remember sharing this crazy idea with her one of those days when her mind was present and the reality of the Alzheimer’s disease consuming her mind and body seemed just a fading nightmare. To my surprise, she liked the idea of writing a book and we got the inspiration from my childhood experiences to mold a more tangible draft…at least it was a start. However, the progression of her illness and juggling life postponed the project. My mom recently passed, and those of you who have lost a loved one, know that life is not the same without their presence. As a mental health strategy, I used our unfinished project to help process my feelings, thoughts and hopes. I finished the book in her memory. ‘Maria’s Creative Workshop’ is a positive and inspiring tale about a little girl who enjoys using her creativity to plan, fix, and make new things in her special place. This book offers a perfect example of perseverance and creativity. Portraying beautiful illustrations to engage young readers, this book also includes vocabulary words to enrich children’s language & a list of questions to fire up the imagination of youngsters eager to create their own inventions. With an emphasis on Creativity, an essential STEAM skill, It is a great tie-in to learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEAM). “Maria’s Creative Workshop” launched this month!! Siempre tuve el sueño de escribir un libro para niños, mi madre siempre me animó a ser la mejor versión de mí. Recuerdo haber compartido está loca idea con ella uno de esos días en que su mente estaba presente y la realidad de la enfermedad de Alzheimer que consumía su mente y cuerpo parecía una pesadilla que se desvanecía. Para mi sorpresa, a ella le gustó la idea de escribir un libro y nos inspiramos en las experiencias de mi infancia para moldear un borrador más tangible… al menos fue un comienzo. Sin embargo, la progresión de su enfermedad y los malabares de la vida pospusieron el proyecto. Mi mamá falleció recientemente, y ustedes que han perdido a un ser querido, saben que la vida no es igual sin su presencia. Como estrategia de salud mental, utilicé nuestro proyecto inconcluso para ayudarme a procesar mis sentimientos, pensamientos y esperanzas. Terminé el libro en su memoria. “El Rincón de Mayte" es una historia positiva e inspiradora sobre una niña que disfruta usar su creatividad para planificar, arreglar y crear cosas nuevas en su lugar especial. Este libro ofrece un ejemplo perfecto de perseverancia y creatividad. Este libro, que presenta hermosas ilustraciones para involucrar a los lectores jóvenes, también incluye palabras de vocabulario para enriquecer el lenguaje de los niños y una lista de preguntas para encender la imaginación de los jóvenes deseosos de crear sus propios inventos.
